Chapter Seventeen
Overview
Bel and Ash investigate Alice Moore’s reported January sighting at Baa-Baa Boutique and find an ambiguous screenshot of a masked woman who might be Rachel. The crucial discovery is that the woman bought a red long-sleeved top and black jeans, matching the clothes Rachel wore when she disappeared and when she reappeared.
This turns Bel’s suspicion into a clearer theory: Rachel may have staged her return by recreating her missing-day outfit, which would undermine the entire captivity story. Ash remains cautious about the evidence but supports Bel’s reasoning, strengthening their alliance.
Summary
Bel Price and Ash arrive in North Conway and park near the library before heading to Baa-Baa Boutique, the shop connected to Alice Moore’s January Facebook post. Ash films while Bel leads, and their joking argument about his driving and his interest in a novelty shirt shows their growing ease as an investigative pair.
Inside the boutique, Bel and Ash meet Alice Moore, the owner. Alice recognizes Bel as Rachel Price’s daughter and assumes Bel must be happy about Rachel’s return, but Bel stays guarded. After Ash gets Alice to sign a documentary release, Bel explains that they want to discuss Alice’s reported January sighting of someone who looked like Rachel.
Alice says the woman wore a Covid-style mask, a beanie, and had long dark-blond hair like Rachel’s, leaving only her eyes visible. Alice admits she later assumed she must have been wrong because Rachel has now returned with an abduction story. Bel presses for evidence, and Alice reveals she no longer has the surveillance footage but saved a screenshot of the woman.
The screenshot is too blurry and covered-up to prove the woman is Rachel, but Bel has Alice send it to her phone. Bel then asks what the woman bought, and Alice remembers that the customer paid cash for black jeans and a plain red long-sleeved top. Bel realizes the items match the clothes Rachel wore when she disappeared and again when she reappeared, supposedly after sixteen years in captivity.
Bel abruptly leaves with Ash and explains in the car that if Rachel no longer had the original clothes, Rachel could have bought similar ones to stage a convincing reappearance. The possibility that the boutique clothes have Baa-Baa labels gives Bel a potential way to test the theory. Ash warns that Alice’s memory is not solid proof, but Bel feels the coincidence is too strong and concludes Rachel may have planned her own return, meaning the basement and captor story may be false. Ash accepts that Bel’s suspicion is not crazy, and their partnership strengthens through the shared discovery.
