Chapter Twelve
Overview
Rachel’s first morning at home intensifies Bel’s discomfort as Rachel tries to perform closeness, asks Bel probing questions, and then bonds more easily with Jeff, Sherry, and Carter than with Bel or Charlie. The family begins preparing for the public consequences of Rachel’s return, including a police-managed press conference and renewed scrutiny of Charlie’s past arrest.
The private reunion is disrupted when Ramsey and the documentary crew arrive with a camera, following a rumor that Rachel has reappeared. Charlie blocks them from filming, but Rachel’s presence has already transformed the documentary and raises the stakes of how her story will be told.
Summary
Bel stays hidden in her room the morning after Rachel comes home, afraid of encountering the woman who is supposed to be her mother. When Bel hears Charlie return with groceries, Bel goes downstairs. Rachel offers Bel coffee, repeatedly slips toward calling Bel Anna, and says Rachel wants to learn everything about Bel, while Bel keeps her distance and tries to behave because Charlie expects the strangeness to be normal.
During breakfast, Rachel questions Bel about school, college, hobbies, and friends. Bel answers minimally and explains that Carter is Jeff and Sherry’s daughter, born after Rachel disappeared. Rachel then asks about family members and learns that Charlie’s father Pat has vascular dementia and that Rachel’s own father died of cancer four years earlier. The news breaks Rachel’s composure, and Rachel leaves to wash her hands, returning with red eyes.
Charlie says Chief Winter called about preparations for the next morning’s press conference and psychiatric follow-up. Rachel asks whether Charlie knows Winter, and Charlie reminds Rachel that Winter arrested Charlie for Rachel’s murder. When Charlie and Bel both ignore calls from Ramsey, Rachel urges Charlie to call Jeff and Sherry so they can hear the truth before the public does, and Charlie uses the errand as a reason to leave the tense kitchen.
Jeff, Sherry, and Carter arrive soon after. Sherry and Jeff react emotionally, embracing Rachel and calling Rachel’s return a miracle, while Carter meets Rachel for the first time. Bel notices that Rachel readily hugs and warmly addresses Jeff, Sherry, and Carter, yet has not hugged Bel or Charlie and still struggles with Bel’s name. The gathering shifts into careful small talk, avoiding Rachel’s captivity, and Rachel takes particular interest in Carter’s school, reading, and dancing. Bel feels increasingly displaced and suspicious.
The family discusses the coming press conference and the media attention it will bring. Rachel admits she has nothing suitable to wear, and Sherry suggests Bel lend Rachel a dress because they are the same size; Bel reluctantly agrees after Rachel again calls Bel Anna. Another knock interrupts them: Ramsey, James, Saba, and Ash arrive with the documentary camera rolling, having heard a rumor that Rachel has reappeared. Ramsey is stunned to see Rachel alive, but Charlie angrily stops the filming and orders the crew to wait until after the official press conference. Before the crew leaves, Rachel asks the documentary’s title, and Ramsey says it was called The Disappearance of Rachel Price, though it will now need a new name.
