Chapter Five

Overview

Bel overhears Charlie and Jeff arguing and learns Charlie agreed to the documentary because the family needs money for their father’s care, while the alternative was declaring Rachel dead for insurance money. The revelation strengthens Bel’s loyalty to Charlie, even as the documentary begins invading her school life.

At school, Ramsey’s plan to film Rachel’s former workplace forces Bel to confront Rachel’s lingering public presence and Bel’s own lack of close friends. Bel responds by lashing out, protecting Ash from mockery, rejecting Sam’s attempt to reconnect, and trying to escape the cameras by pretending to be ill.

Summary

Bel prepares for bed by adding another stolen item, a freshman’s scrunchie, to the secret collection in her nightstand. The drawer reveals a habit of taking small objects and hiding them, reflecting Bel’s private shame and need for control. After checking her alarm, Bel hears voices downstairs and realizes Uncle Jeff is visiting late.

Bel listens from her doorway as Jeff tells Charlie he is worried about the documentary. Jeff fears the filmmakers might edit the family to make Charlie look guilty and bring back the public attention, harassment, and suspicion that followed Rachel’s disappearance and Charlie’s trial. Charlie insists the documentary must continue because he signed a contract, sold his life rights, and accepted forty thousand dollars.

Charlie explains that the money is needed to pay for their father’s full-time care. When Jeff suggests there must be another way, Charlie says the only other option was applying for Rachel’s death certificate to collect her life insurance, which would make Charlie look even more suspicious. Jeff apologizes, and Charlie says he would do anything for the family. Bel takes this as proof that Charlie had a good reason for agreeing to the documentary and renews her faith in him.

The next morning, Bel and Carter find Ramsey, Ash, the crew, and Principal Wheeler outside Gorham Middle & High School. Ramsey explains they are filming Rachel’s former workplace and interviewing teachers who knew Rachel, including Principal Wheeler, Mrs. Torres, and Mr. Tripp, the homeroom teacher who found Bel in Rachel’s car sixteen years earlier. Ramsey also asks to film Bel walking the halls and to interview her friends at lunch, which makes Bel uncomfortable because Carter quickly leaves for her own friend group.

Inside the school, students mock Ash’s unusual outfit. Bel responds by deliberately swinging her backpack into one of the girls who laughs at him, then walks away without apologizing. Passing the hallway display honoring Rachel, which Bel thinks of as The Rachel Shrine, reinforces Bel’s resentment that Rachel still dominates parts of her life.

Sam Blake approaches Bel and offers to be interviewed as one of Bel’s friends. Bel cruelly reminds Sam that Sam once seemed to believe Charlie might be a murderer, causing Sam to retreat. Bel reflects that pushing people away before they leave hurts less. In homeroom, Bel catches Mr. Tripp checking his appearance for the cameras, then lies that she has a bad period and may be sick with Covid so she can be sent home and avoid filming.
