Chapter Forty-three
Overview
Bel finds Charlie chained inside the same container where Rachel was imprisoned, forcing Bel to confront the father Bel has defended for years. Charlie claims Rachel locked him up without cause, but Bel refuses to rescue him until Charlie answers for Patrick’s role and Charlie’s suspected part in Rachel’s disappearance.
Bel’s accusation reframes Charlie’s old alibi as a possible part of the abduction plan rather than proof of innocence. The chapter ends with a familiar voice contradicting Bel’s conclusion, suggesting that the truth about Charlie’s involvement is more complicated than Bel believes.
Summary
Bel steps into the red truck container and sees that it has been outfitted as a long-term prison: insulated walls, a mattress, toilet, fan, water, food, clothes, toiletries, and batteries. Charlie is inside, chained by a cuff around his ankle. Relieved to see Bel, Charlie immediately asks who is with her and becomes alarmed when Bel says Ash is there.
Charlie orders Ash to leave and insists that no one call the police, calling the matter family business. Bel takes Ash outside and explains that she needs to face Charlie alone because Charlie is her father and she needs the whole truth from him. Ash is reluctant, but Bel asks him to return to the hotel and not call the police until she decides what to do.
Once Bel returns, Charlie says Rachel lured him to the truck, cuffed him, and has been keeping him there without explanation. Charlie calls Rachel crazy and asks Bel to find a way to break the cuff or chain. Bel refuses to help until Charlie explains why Rachel would imprison him, and she challenges Charlie’s refusal to involve the police if Charlie is truly innocent.
Bel then reveals what Bel has learned: Rachel was never gone, but was held in this very container for years. Bel says Patrick Price abducted Rachel, kept Rachel at the logging yard, brought food, water, and books, and that Charlie knew. Charlie denies knowing anything, but Bel no longer accepts Charlie’s denials as automatically true.
Bel lays out her theory that Charlie and Patrick planned Rachel’s disappearance together. Charlie deliberately cut his hand at work at two o’clock to create a hospital alibi for the planned abduction, but Patrick was late because Rachel went to the mall, leaving just enough doubt for police to arrest Charlie anyway. When Charlie insists he did not know Rachel was in the container, a familiar voice behind Bel interrupts and says Charlie did not know.
