Chapter Forty-two

Overview

Bel and Ash realize Rachel’s hidden message names Patrick Price as the person who kept Rachel in a red truck at the old Price logging yard. Searching Patrick’s books reveals Rachel repeated the plea many times, and one message suggests more than one person may have been held.

Bel follows the clue to the logging yard, where childhood memories of Patrick’s warnings become evidence of concealment. At the red truck, Bel and Ash hear someone trapped inside, and Bel opens the container to find her father, Charlie, alive and imprisoned.

Summary

Bel and Ash absorb the hidden message in The Memory Thief: Rachel wrote that Patrick Price was keeping Rachel in a red truck at the Price logging yard. Bel realizes her grandfather was the abductor, not a stranger, and reinterprets her earliest memory of being found in the car as possibly trying to say “Paw-Paw.”

Bel explains that the Price logging yard is in Gorham and that she and Carter used to sled there as children. Patrick always warned them away from the old trucks, which Bel now understands may have been because Rachel was hidden there. Bel is devastated that Rachel was so close for years and that Bel had once read the same book without noticing Rachel’s plea.

Bel and Ash search Patrick’s shelves and find the same pencil-coded message in many books, including recent titles. One copy of The Green Mile contains a variation: “we are being kept,” suggesting Rachel may not have been alone. The discovery convinces Bel that Rachel was held at the yard for much longer than anyone realized, and Bel decides she must go there to see the red truck herself and understand what Patrick and possibly Charlie did to Rachel.

Ash drives Bel to the old railway bridge near the mountain trailhead, and they cross the river on foot in the dark. They follow the path toward the abandoned Price & Sons Logging Yard, enter through a broken gap in the fence, and move through the overgrown yard toward the junk pile Patrick had forbidden Bel to approach as a child.

Bel and Ash find the red semitrailer with a shipping container attached. Ash stops filming because the place feels like a crime scene rather than documentary footage. Before they open it, they hear muffled shouts from inside; Bel climbs up, releases the locks, opens the container, and finds her father, Charlie, trapped inside. Charlie first mistakes Bel for Rachel, then recognizes Bel.
