Chapter Fifty

Overview

The final interview lets Rachel, Bel, and Carter publicly sustain their cover story about Charlie, Jeff, and Sherry while reframing Rachel's unresolved captivity as a mystery she no longer has to fear. Ramsey chooses compassion over sensational truth by deleting the backed-up incriminating footage and shaping the documentary around Rachel and Bel's reconciliation.

Rachel then relieves Carter's guilt by claiming responsibility for Charlie's death, a possible final lie Bel accepts because it protects Carter. The chapter closes with the family beginning ordinary life together, with Bel reclaiming trust, friendship, and the belief that loved ones can return.

Summary

Two weeks after Jeff and Sherry were last seen and nearly a month after Charlie disappeared, Bel, Rachel, and Carter sit for the documentary's final interview. Ramsey asks what happened to Charlie, Jeff, and Sherry, and Rachel, Bel, and Carter repeat their prepared story: the police believe the three ran away to Canada, possibly because Rachel's return exposed pressures, secrets, and money trouble. Carter says she misses her parents but is staying with Rachel and Bel because she is family.

Ramsey then asks about Rachel's false identification of Phillip Alves as her captor, since police discovered Phillip was in Mexico when Rachel reappeared. Rachel explains that fear and darkness made her mistaken, and she says the real captor is still unknown. When Ramsey asks whether Rachel fears never knowing the truth, Rachel answers that she can live with mystery now, because she fought her way back to her family and refuses to live in fear anymore.

After Ramsey calls wrap, the crew applauds. Outside, Rachel thanks Ramsey, and Bel says goodbye to him. Ramsey reveals that he had backed up the deleted footage of Bel and Ash's investigation, but he permanently erased every cloud copy and gives Bel the final memory stick. Ramsey admits he knows the documentary could have been more sensational, but he has chosen to make a quieter film about Rachel and Bel finding each other again.

Bel gives Ash the returned “Pugs Not Drugs” shirt, and the two awkwardly admit they will miss each other before the crew leaves. In Rachel's car, Bel chooses the backseat, realizing the seat itself never hurt her; Charlie and the other men did. Bel also realizes Rachel was “Lucas Ayer,” the Twitter account that tipped Ramsey toward the Rachel Price case, and Rachel confirms she engineered the documentary's arrival to pressure Charlie and potentially earn money after coming home.

When Carter worries that viewers will see through her lies and know she killed Charlie and Jeff, Rachel insists Carter killed no one. Rachel says Charlie killed Jeff by pulling him over the edge, then claims Charlie survived the first fall and Rachel killed him with a second fall in the mine. Bel suspects this may be one final protective lie, but sees it ease Carter's guilt and accepts the mystery.

At the hardware store, the three joke about paint and begin rebuilding their home life. Carter goes to greet school friends, and Bel understands that people who truly love her can leave and still come back. Bel tells Rachel she may message Sam, an old friend, and as Bel and Rachel enter the store together, Bel feels they are learning how to fit back together as mother and daughter.
