Chapter Eighteen
Overview
Bel returns home from investigating Rachel and finds Rachel inside Bel’s bedroom, turning Bel’s last safe space into another place Rachel has invaded. Their tense conversation shows Rachel trying to build intimacy while Bel keeps scoring defensive points, especially around Grandpa, Charlie’s imprisonment, and Rachel’s long absence.
Rachel’s new phone, Ramsey’s planned filmed family dinner, and Rachel’s question about Bel’s trip to the hotel raise the stakes: Rachel is becoming more embedded in the family and may be watching for inconsistencies. Bel successfully lies about the hotel visit for now, but the encounter confirms that Bel’s investigation must stay hidden.
Summary
Ash drops Bel at home after their visit to Alice Moore’s boutique. Bel finds Rachel’s new car parked in Charlie’s usual spot and reporters from major networks outside the house. With Charlie still at work, Bel feels that Rachel is taking over the house and that Bel needs stronger evidence if Bel is going to push Rachel back out of their lives.
Bel enters quietly, hoping to avoid Rachel and retreat to Bel’s bedroom, the one place Bel still considers safe. Instead, Bel finds Rachel inside the room by the bookshelves, holding Bel’s copy of The Memory Thief. Rachel claims Carter told her Bel reads a lot and that Rachel only came in to borrow a book, but Bel feels violated by Rachel’s presence in her private space.
Rachel tries to connect over the book, calling it one of her favorites, but Bel undercuts the moment and says Grandpa used to read it to Bel while Charlie was in jail for Rachel’s murder. Rachel says she should visit Charlie’s father, and Bel sharply replies that Grandpa probably will not remember Rachel, since he has forgotten Bel and Carter despite their constant presence.
Rachel then reveals that Carter visited earlier and helped set up Rachel’s new phone, including adding Bel’s number. Rachel says Bel can call anytime, which only reminds Bel that Rachel was absent for sixteen years. Rachel also says Ramsey suggested filming a large family dinner on Friday with Charlie, Bel, Rachel, Jeff, Sherry, Carter, Rachel’s mother, Grandpa, and Yordan, making the documentary’s intrusion into family life even bigger.
Rachel mentions that Ramsey saw Bel at the hotel after school, forcing Bel to cover her tracks. Bel lies that she stopped by lost and found to look for a scrunchie from her interview, hiding the real reason: Bel and Ash were pursuing clues about Rachel’s possible staged return. Rachel appears to accept the explanation and shifts to dinner plans, but the tense exchange ends only when Charlie arrives home, giving Bel relief because the house feels like home again when Charlie is there.
