Rachel gives Pat a copy of The Memory Thief, claiming it is from Rachel and Bel, though Bel remembers telling Rachel that Pat had already read the book to her when she was little. Pat confuses people and asks for Charlie, prompting Jeff to say Charlie is on a trip and will return soon. Bel presses Jeff about Charlie’s disappearance, and Jeff describes Charlie as impulsive, citing past examples including a woman Charlie met at Taco Bell after Ellen left.

Jeff’s offhand story makes Bel realize that Charlie once left Bel alone in a car for hours after her twelfth birthday trip while Charlie went to a motel with a stranger. Charlie had told Bel the absence lasted only about fifteen minutes, and Bel had reshaped the memory into a harmless anecdote. The revelation devastates Bel because it proves Charlie lied about abandoning her in the exact way Rachel’s disappearance had traumatized her, forcing Bel to question what else Charlie may have hidden.
