Chapter Forty-four

Overview

Rachel reveals the central truth: Charlie ordered Patrick to kill Rachel, but Patrick imprisoned Rachel instead, leaving Charlie to believe Rachel was dead for sixteen years. Bel learns that Rachel had actually planned to escape with Bel, not abandon her, and that Rachel staged her return and Charlie’s disappearance after escaping during Patrick’s memory loss.

The chapter shifts Bel’s loyalty decisively from Charlie to Rachel when Bel refuses to take the key and leaves Charlie chained. The moment creates a new mother-daughter alliance, but the arrival of an unknown witness interrupts their decision and raises immediate danger.

Summary

Rachel enters the container and confirms that Charlie is telling the truth only about one thing: Charlie did not know Rachel had been imprisoned in the red truck because Charlie believed Patrick had killed Rachel. Rachel explains that Charlie ordered Patrick to kill her, using Patrick’s role in Maria Price’s fatal fall as blackmail. Patrick instead kept Rachel alive and imprisoned her, telling himself he was saving Rachel from Charlie.

Rachel tells Bel why Charlie wanted Rachel dead. Charlie had been gaslighting Rachel for months to make Rachel doubt herself and depend on him, but Rachel realized the danger after Charlie falsely accused Rachel of leaving baby Bel alone in the bath. Rachel borrowed three thousand dollars from Julian Tripp because Charlie had cut Rachel off from her money, and Rachel planned to flee with Bel that same day.

Rachel explains the full truth about the mall disappearance. Rachel had planned the first disappearance by using a staff door, a recycling bin, and a camera blind spot so Rachel and Bel could vanish and start over. Patrick followed them after their escape from the mall, forced Rachel’s car off a quiet road, cuffed Rachel, shoved Rachel into his trunk, checked on Bel, and then brought Rachel to the prepared container at the logging yard.

Rachel describes fifteen years of captivity: the insulation, chain, generator, heater, fan, lamp, supplies, books, and hidden messages she placed in the books Patrick brought her. Rachel had hoped Bel would someday find the faint marks, and Bel realizes Patrick later read those same books to her without understanding their meaning. Rachel also reveals the escape plan she had intended for herself and Bel: switch cars, sink the old car, buy fake identities from Robert Meyer in Vermont, fly into Canada, and build a new life in Dalhousie, New Brunswick.

Rachel then explains her reappearance. Rachel escaped the previous August after Patrick’s stroke caused him to miss supply visits and then forget who Rachel was; Rachel lied that she was a trapped Realtor and walked out. Instead of going to police, Rachel hid, recovered, researched Bel, created a false captivity story, bought replacement clothes, and returned home prepared to expose and punish Charlie. Rachel also admits she trapped Charlie after Charlie tried to run away in the night, staging evidence so police would think Charlie had fled under a new identity.

Charlie demands that Bel take Rachel’s key and free him, while Rachel offers the key and tells Bel the choice is hers. Rachel admits there is still more to tell Bel, but not in front of Charlie. Bel chooses Rachel by closing Rachel’s hand around the key and refusing to release Charlie. Charlie attacks and grabs Bel’s sleeve, but Rachel protects Bel; as mother and daughter prepare to leave Charlie chained, an unknown person appears outside the truck and asks what is happening.
