Chapter Thirty-eight

Overview

Phillip Alves’s arrest briefly offers Bel a possible explanation for Rachel’s disappearance and a way to believe Charlie might be innocent and able to return. Ash’s skepticism pushes Bel to defend both Rachel and Charlie, leading Bel to lash out and break with Ash. Just as Bel considers a truce with Rachel, Bel finds Charlie’s wedding ring hidden in Rachel’s drawer, reigniting Bel’s certainty that Rachel is lying and that Charlie may be dead.

Summary

After giving statements at the police station, Rachel and Bel return home. Rachel offers to cancel Bel’s grandfather’s birthday dinner after Phillip Alves’s attack, but Bel says she is fine, though she is exhausted and newly unsure whether Rachel might have been telling the truth. Rachel says it is over because Phillip has been found, but Bel cannot settle into certainty.

Ash meets Bel outside and asks what happened after Bel’s text. Bel explains that Phillip broke into the house looking for clues, attacked Bel when he thought Bel knew something, and ran only after Rachel came back and threatened him. Bel then says Rachel has identified Phillip as the man who abducted her, and that state police have already arrested him after finding him on Route Two.

Ash struggles to accept Phillip as the answer. Ash points out problems with Rachel’s story, including Phillip’s years in prison, the money Rachel borrowed from Julian Tripp, the January sighting, and Rachel’s secret search in Bel’s grandfather’s house. Bel answers with uncertainty but begins defending Rachel because believing Rachel is less painful than considering Phillip’s implications about Charlie.

When Ash suggests the truth seemed closer to home, Bel realizes Ash means Charlie. Bel angrily insists Charlie had an alibi and may have run away only because he feared renewed suspicion once Rachel returned. Bel then deliberately hurts Ash by repeating Charlie’s warning that Ash was using Bel for the documentary, accusing Ash of manipulation, and ending their relationship before walking away in tears.

Later, Rachel cooks for the birthday dinner while Bel tries to believe Phillip’s arrest will clear Charlie and allow Charlie to come home. Bel feels a fragile softening toward Rachel and decides to return the tiny baby sock Bel stole from Rachel’s drawer as an olive branch. In Rachel’s room, Bel places the sock back but discovers a hidden plain gold wedding band engraved with her parents’ wedding date.

Bel recognizes the ring as Charlie’s wedding ring, the one Charlie supposedly could not remove. The discovery destroys Bel’s hope that Charlie simply ran away and makes Bel believe Rachel has done something final to him. Bel storms downstairs, slams the ring onto the coffee table, and confronts Rachel, demanding to know what Rachel has done to Charlie.
