Chapter Seven
Overview
Bel flees the documentary reenactment in anger and shame, choosing to walk home rather than call Charlie while she is still upset. On the way, she mistakes a damaged, shuffling woman for the actress playing Rachel, only to realize the woman is actually Rachel Price.
The chapter turns the documentary’s speculation into a living crisis: Rachel is no longer just a vanished mother, a crime mystery, or a role to be performed. Her reappearance threatens to overturn everything Bel and her family believe about the past.
Summary
After storming away from the reenactment site, Bel runs through the trees toward the highway. She regrets the family’s involvement in the documentary, feeling that the cameras have reduced her life to something sad and broken for strangers to examine.
Bel considers calling Charlie to pick her up but decides against it because she is still too angry and wants to find kinder words before speaking to him. Instead, Bel chooses a simple plan: walk home, calm down, then call her father.
Bel walks alongside the highway and through familiar parts of town, passing Main Street, McDonald’s, the dollar store, and Church Street. As Bel crosses the railway tracks near the cemetery, she notices a woman ahead of her, shuffling slowly and limping in damaged shoes.
At first, Bel assumes the woman is the actress playing Rachel because the woman wears a red top and black jeans and has short blond hair. As Bel gets closer, Bel sees that the clothes are filthy, torn, and faded, and that the woman’s hair is grimy and roughly cut, which makes the explanation of an actress in costume stop making sense.
Bel calls out to ask who the woman is. When the woman turns, Bel recognizes Rachel Price by the gray-blue eyes that match Bel’s, the pointed chin, the worn face, and the birthmark on her forehead. The impossible becomes real: Rachel Price has reappeared.
