Chapter Thirty-two
Overview
Bel confronts Jeff with the hidden recording of him questioning Grandpa about Rachel, forcing Jeff to admit he suspected Grandpa might know something about where Rachel was found. A call from Bob from Vermont reveals that Charlie’s last call was silent and that three thousand dollars could have bought a fake identity, though Bob denies ever meeting Rachel or Charlie. Bel gains no firm proof, but the chapter sharpens her suspicion that the family is hiding fragments of the truth and points her next investigation toward Grandpa.
Summary
Bel goes into the sporting-goods store break room and confronts Uncle Jeff about Rachel. Jeff first assumes Bel wants to discuss Carter or Charlie, but Bel says she believes Jeff knows something about Rachel that he has not shared.
Bel plays audio recorded during the family dinner, when Jeff helped Grandpa into the car while wearing a live microphone. The recording captures Jeff pressing Grandpa to remember where Rachel was and who found her. Jeff reacts nervously, and Bel uses the recording to force an explanation.
Jeff claims Grandpa had said something strange about Rachel a few days earlier, possibly confusing an old memory with Rachel’s reappearance, and that Jeff only wanted to test whether seeing Rachel had sparked anything. Bel remains unconvinced and asks whether Rachel ever had reason to fear Jeff, and whether Jeff knows where Charlie is. Jeff denies both, insisting Charlie will come back.
Jeff’s phone rings, and Bel sees the caller is Bob from Vermont. Bel realizes Bob is Robert Meyer, the last person Charlie called before disappearing, and answers the call herself. Bob says the state police have already interviewed him, that Charlie’s call lasted only seconds, and that Bob heard only wind and no voice.
Bel presses Bob about why Charlie might have been heading toward him and about whether Bob sells fake identities. Bob denies doing so, but carefully admits that three thousand dollars would be more than enough to buy a new identity if someone knew how. Bel asks whether Rachel came to him sixteen years ago with that money, and Bob clearly denies ever meeting Rachel or either of Bel’s parents.
After the call, Jeff says he trusts Bob, while Bel remains wary of both men. Bel warns Jeff not to tell Rachel about the call, threatening to expose Jeff’s suspicions about Rachel in return. Leaving the store, Bel thinks the family is giving up pieces of Rachel and themselves, and decides Grandpa is her next target.
