Chapter Forty-nine

Overview

Rachel returns home after completing her part of the cover-up, allowing Bel and Carter a brief sense of safety before the next threat arrives. The three women confront Sherry, expose her role in Carter’s stolen childhood, and force her into permanent exile with a false story about Jeff waiting in Canada.

Carter’s choice to reject Sherry and claim Bel and Rachel as her family completes a major emotional shift. Rachel also decides Grandpa’s punishment will be abandonment rather than exposure, leaving the surviving Prices to build a new family by choosing what to do with the people who hurt them.

Summary

After the night at Point Lookout, Carter cannot sleep and fears someone will discover what she did. Bel reassures Carter that Carter did nothing wrong and that the family will protect her. When Rachel returns before dawn, Bel finally feels safe enough to sleep because Rachel is home and watching over both daughters.

Rachel wakes Bel and Carter at seven-thirty with coffee and checks that each task is finished: Bel has destroyed the documentary footage, Carter has retrieved the books, and Rachel says her own part is done. Rachel is exhausted and bruised, but she immediately turns to the next danger: Sherry will soon come looking for Jeff and Carter, so Rachel explains a plan and lets Carter decide whether to go through with it.

When Sherry arrives, Rachel, Bel, and Carter confront her together. Rachel accuses Sherry of stealing Carter as a baby and of being complicit in Rachel’s captivity. Sherry denies it, tries to pull Carter away, and insists she is Carter’s mother, but Carter rejects her and says Rachel is her mother.

Rachel uses the threat of DNA testing and prison to force Sherry into accepting a fabricated escape plan. Rachel claims Jeff confessed, chose exile instead of police involvement, and is waiting in Canada with Charlie. Rachel gives Sherry Jeff’s phone, keys, and instructions to take cash, contact Bob Meyer for new identities, discard her old documents, cross the border by air, and never contact the family again.

Sherry tries to frame herself as a loving mother, but Carter says Bel raised her and that she chooses Rachel and Bel as family. Sherry leaves, and Carter struggles with the painful goodbye. When Carter asks about Grandpa, Rachel decides not to expose or punish him further because of his dementia, but also refuses to visit him; she will keep paying for Yordan to care for him until he dies alone and confused.

The chapter closes with Rachel, Bel, and Carter standing together as a family of three. Ms. Nelson watches from across the street, unaware of the truth. Bel awkwardly waves to seem normal, and the small family’s teasing exchange ends with Rachel assuring Bel that she will live.
