Chapter Thirty-one

Overview

Bel returns home to find Rachel bonding with Carter, which intensifies Bel's fear that Rachel is manipulating the family and isolating Bel. Rachel's comments about Charlie, Grandpa's birthday, and Grandpa's routine deepen Bel's suspicion that Rachel knows more than she admits.

In private, Carter resists Bel's warnings and defends Rachel, leaving Bel more isolated. Bel shifts her focus toward Jeff as the most promising source of answers about Rachel and Charlie's disappearance.

Summary

Bel comes home expecting confrontation, but instead finds Rachel and Carter comfortably watching a movie together. Bel immediately reads the scene as a strategic move by Rachel to win Carter over, so Bel sits between them as a physical and emotional barrier, determined not to let Rachel take Carter's loyalty.

During the movie, Carter reassures Bel that Charlie will be found in Vermont, then turns to Rachel for confirmation. Rachel says she is sure Charlie will return, but Bel studies Rachel's reaction and treats the answer as another possible clue. When Rachel mentions Grandpa's upcoming eighty-fifth birthday dinner and suggests keeping the tradition even if Charlie is not back, Bel worries Rachel may know Charlie will still be gone.

Rachel also asks about whether Yordan takes Grandpa out for walks, which Bel notices as part of a pattern of questions about Grandpa's routine. Bel shuts the topic down and tests Rachel with a harmless question about mac and cheese. After the movie, Rachel suggests making movie night a weekly tradition, and Carter agrees to sleep in Bel's room rather than Charlie's bed.

Later, in Bel's bedroom, Bel questions Carter about Rachel. Carter defends Rachel as kind and traumatized, while Bel argues Rachel's story is false and suspicious because Charlie disappeared soon after Rachel returned. Carter says Rachel only asked normal questions about school and dancing, leaving Bel frustrated that Carter is not convinced.

Bel decides Jeff is still her next route to the truth because of the audio Ash found of Jeff pressuring Grandpa about Rachel. Bel cautiously asks Carter whether Jeff has said or done anything strange since Rachel's return. Carter first denies it, then admits everyone has been strange, especially Bel, before turning away and ending the conversation.
