Chapter 15
Overview
Hannah and Garrett move past the awkwardness of her catching him with Tiffany and settle into another tutoring session, where Hannah is surprised by how strong Garrett’s academic work really is. Their conversation turns unexpectedly vulnerable when Garrett reveals the crushing pressure his father tied to hockey, clarifying why his eligibility and future matter so much to him. By the end, Garrett refocuses on their fake date with Justin and insists they may need to practice touching and kissing, escalating the tension between them.
Summary
Before Hannah arrives for their Thursday tutoring session, Garrett makes sure he is alone and reflects on how unsatisfying his encounter with Tiffany had felt. When Hannah comes in, she jokingly covers her eyes so she will not walk in on another hookup, and their banter quickly eases the awkwardness from the previous day.
They turn to work, and Hannah reads Garrett’s revised ethics essay. She is genuinely impressed by how strong it is, which gives Garrett a surge of pride and confirms that he can do the work when he focuses. Their exchange also reveals that Garrett is doing well in his other classes, challenging Hannah’s assumptions about athletes coasting academically.
As they discuss Garrett’s upcoming makeup midterm, Hannah reassures him that he is ready if he answers from the philosophers’ perspectives instead of his own. Garrett admits how much he needs the grade because hockey is his whole life, and that confession leads to a more serious revelation: his father pressured him from childhood with strict training and the message that failure would make him less of a man. Hannah realizes that Garrett’s intense drive comes from more than ambition, and Garrett acknowledges that he loves hockey but feels he cannot fail.
Hannah urges Garrett to think about a backup plan, and he reluctantly admits he could coach or become a sportscaster if hockey ended. Garrett then asks about Hannah’s own future, and Hannah says she is unsure she wants a performing career; she might prefer songwriting or teaching instead. Their honest conversation deepens their connection, even as Garrett keeps the mood playful by teasing her about stripping and her body.
The focus shifts back to their Saturday fake date for Justin Kohl. Garrett points out that if Hannah stiffens whenever he touches her, their act will not convince Justin, so he argues that they should rehearse physical affection in advance. Hannah resists his flirting and refuses to let him touch or kiss her, but Garrett keeps pushing until he provocatively suggests that her real objection must be that she is a bad kisser, ending the chapter by daring her to prove otherwise.
