Chapter 38

Overview

Garrett finally acts on his fury toward Rob Delaney, attacking the man who helped Hannah’s rapist avoid consequences and earning a suspension. The fallout forces Garrett to confront both his shame and the depth of his protectiveness toward Hannah. Their later conversation deepens the relationship, as Hannah reframes justice and healing while Garrett admits how lonely and emotionally damaged he was before loving her.

Summary

After Hannah spots Rob Delaney at the arena, Garrett charges toward him in a rage. Rob recognizes Hannah’s connection to Garrett and tries to act defiant, but Garrett confronts him about helping Aaron assault Hannah and then lying to protect him. When Rob insults Hannah, Garrett loses control and punches him, and the fight becomes a chaotic blur.

In the middle of the struggle, Logan grabs Garrett to stop him, and Garrett accidentally hits Logan as well. Coach arrives, and Garrett is forced to face the consequences of what he has done. Later, Briar officials question him, and because Hannah allows Garrett to explain Rob’s role in her past, Coach learns the reason for the attack. Garrett receives a one-game suspension, while Rob declines to press charges and admits he provoked Garrett.

Garrett then goes to Hannah’s room exhausted, ashamed, and afraid she will see him differently. Instead, Hannah immediately embraces him and asks if he is okay. Garrett apologizes for confronting Rob, admits that imagining Hannah being humiliated and disbelieved made him snap, and tells her about the suspension and his guilt over revealing her trauma to Coach and Logan.

Hannah tells Garrett that what happened to her was unfair, but dwelling on men like Aaron and Rob only gives them more power. She compares their freedom to Phil Graham’s continued public admiration despite his abuse, arguing that many abusers go unpunished and that the best revenge is living well. Garrett breaks down and admits that he was emotionally broken and isolated before meeting Hannah, and that the idea of anyone hurting her tears him apart. Hannah reassures him that losing his temper does not make him dangerous to her, and the chapter ends with her comforting him until he falls asleep in her bed.
