Chapter 18
Overview
Hannah reconnects with her neglected friends, but the evening quickly becomes defined by the two men now competing for her attention. Justin finally asks her on a real date and signals that he wants something exclusive, while Garrett repeatedly calls until he secures her company for the night his midterm grade arrives. The chapter matters because Hannah gets what she thought she wanted with Justin, yet her anxious response and instant pull toward Garrett reveal that her feelings are shifting in ways she cannot ignore.
Summary
With Garrett Graham's ethics midterm behind them, Hannah Wells finally uses a free evening to reconnect with her friends at the campus coffeehouse. Dexter, Megan, Stella, and Jeremy tease Hannah for disappearing into tutoring and for spending so much time with Garrett, but Hannah insists she is only helping him pass. The group also gossips about Cass and Mary Jane apparently dating, which makes Hannah dread rehearsal even more because Cass's influence over MJ will likely make their duet conflict worse.
While sitting with her friends, Hannah starts texting Garrett after he tells her about drama at the hockey team's postgame party. Their playful exchange makes Hannah grin, and her friends immediately notice how distracted she is. When Hannah goes to the counter for coffee, several strangers recognize her from Beau's party, underscoring that she has been pulled into Garrett's social orbit.
At the counter, Justin Kohl approaches Hannah and directly asks whether she and Garrett are actually together, because he has seen them leave parties together. Garrett's custom ringtone interrupts the conversation twice, making Hannah's connection to him obvious, but Hannah sticks to the story that she and Garrett are casually seeing each other and are not exclusive. Justin then asks Hannah to dinner, says he wants monogamy if things go well, and schedules a date for the following Sunday. Hannah says yes because she has wanted Justin's attention for a long time, but she also feels unexpected unease, noticing small details that bother her, such as his awkward possessiveness and failure to thank the barista.
After Justin enters his number into Hannah's phone, Garrett calls again, and Justin leaves. Hannah answers, annoyed by Garrett's repeated calls, but Garrett explains that Dean's birthday outing is the next night and that he wants Hannah there because his midterm grade will arrive and he wants to celebrate or commiserate with her. Hannah agrees to go, even though she knows she is now juggling two charged situations at once: a real date with Justin, and another night with Garrett, the friend she recently kissed and cannot quite treat like only a friend anymore.
