Chapter 13

Overview

Garrett struggles to complete Hannah's ethics rewrite, and the assignment makes clear how badly he needs her tutoring if he wants to stay academically eligible. He learns he can still play Friday's game because grades will not post until Monday, but that relief is temporary: if his Ethics grade remains too low, he will be benched. The chapter sharpens the stakes around Garrett's future in hockey while also showing the steady support and humor of his housemates.

Summary

Garrett spends the evening at the kitchen counter trying to revise the practice ethics essay Hannah graded earlier. Hannah has ordered Garrett to redo the paper, but Garrett is stuck because he cannot easily argue the assigned theory's position that citizens should obey authority even when that logic can be used to defend atrocities. Frustrated, Garrett asks Tucker a hypothetical question about being a Nazi ordered by Hitler to kill people.

Tucker immediately rejects the premise and says he would refuse or kill Hitler instead. Garrett explains that the assignment requires him to argue from the perspective that government authority exists for the good of society, which means he has to understand and present reasoning he finds morally repulsive. The exchange emphasizes how much Garrett hates the class and how difficult it is for him to think in the abstract way Hannah expects.

Tucker then asks whether Garrett will be able to play in Friday's game against Eastwood. Garrett reveals that Coach has confirmed he will be on the ice because the midterm grades will not be entered until Monday, so his average is still technically high enough for now. Garrett is relieved, but the good news comes with a deadline: if his Ethics grade is still a D or lower once it posts, he will be benched.

That threat makes Garrett dwell on how much hockey means to him. Garrett wants to lead Briar to another Frozen Four win and eventually succeed in professional hockey on his own merit, not just as the son of a famous player. The possibility that one class could derail those goals leaves him shaken and reinforces why passing Hannah's tutoring work matters so much.

Logan enters and announces that several teammates and their girlfriends are coming over to watch the Bruins game. Tucker and Logan joke about alcohol, Danny's drinking, and Garrett's inability to handle hangovers, then they tease Tucker and Garrett for acting like a married couple because Tucker cooks while Garrett studies. The chapter ends on that domestic note, showing Garrett working under pressure while surrounded by the easy camaraderie of his housemates.
