Chapter 28
Overview
Hannah deepens her place in Garrett's life by cooking dinner for him and his roommates, turning a casual arrangement into something that feels unexpectedly domestic and emotionally significant. Garrett's jealousy of Logan and his private panic at the idea of losing Hannah force him to admit that his feelings are growing beyond sex.
On Halloween, Hannah chooses Garrett over her dorm obligations, deciding to go to him because she senses he should not be alone. The chapter marks a clear shift from a negotiated sexual partnership toward a mutual, deliberate relationship.
Summary
After hockey practice, Garrett returns to the townhouse with Logan and finds Hannah in the kitchen serving a full homemade Italian dinner. Dean and Tucker immediately help, and the roommates devour the lasagna, garlic bread, and salad Hannah has prepared. During dinner, the group talks about Halloween, and Garrett brushes off questions about why he refuses to go out, while Logan openly flirts with Hannah and makes Garrett newly possessive.
When the meal ends, Tucker insists that the people who did not cook must clean, leaving Garrett free to drive Hannah home. Alone in the hall, Garrett thanks Hannah for the dinner, and Hannah shyly connects the gesture to Garrett helping her sexually the night before. Their playful exchange turns intimate, and Garrett begins thinking seriously about how much Hannah already matters to him.
As Garrett walks Hannah out, Garrett reflects on the fact that Hannah has technically already achieved the sexual breakthrough she wanted, which means there is no practical reason for the arrangement between them to continue. Garrett also reminds himself that hockey, graduation, and the draft have always come before relationships. Even so, the idea of losing Hannah produces regret, and after another deep kiss, Garrett realizes he may need to reconsider his refusal to have a girlfriend.
The chapter then shifts to Hannah on Halloween night. Allie appears in an absurd "cat-bird" costume, jokes about sexy Halloween outfits, and heads out to a party with Sean. Left alone and dreading her dorm-crawl duty, Hannah keeps thinking about Garrett and begins to suspect his hatred of Halloween is tied to something more serious than simple annoyance.
Motivated by concern for Garrett and by her own desire to see him, Hannah asks Tracy to let her skip helping with the dorm crawl and borrow her car. Tracy guesses that Garrett is the reason, happily agrees, and hands over the keys. Hannah then texts Garrett to ask if she can come over, and Garrett immediately tells Hannah to get to his place, setting up a more intentional choice to spend the night together.
