Chapter 36

Overview

Garrett realizes during Thanksgiving dinner that Phil is abusing Cindy, and the visit forces him to confront both his father’s current violence and the abuse Garrett suffered growing up. After a direct confrontation with Phil and a private offer of help to Cindy, Garrett leaves shaken and terrified that he might share Phil’s darkness. Hannah steadies him, assures him he is not like his father, and their bond deepens when they confess their love for each other for the first time.

Summary

At Thanksgiving dinner in Phil Graham’s Boston home, Garrett quickly becomes convinced that Phil is physically abusing Cindy. Garrett notices Cindy’s flinches, her long sleeves, her constant attempts to keep Phil calm, and the fear in her face whenever Phil speaks sharply. Being back in the house also forces Garrett to relive memories of Phil’s past abuse toward Garrett and Garrett’s mother, which makes Garrett increasingly angry and unable to tolerate Phil’s behavior.

During the meal, Phil needles Hannah about her future and implies that Garrett’s relationship with her is a distraction from hockey. Garrett rejects that idea, publicly taking Hannah’s side and making clear that their relationship matters to him. Unwilling to stay any longer, Garrett says they are leaving early, and Phil pulls him aside to talk in private.

In Phil’s study, Phil blames Hannah for Garrett’s recent losses and demands total focus on hockey. Garrett refuses to accept that logic, and the argument escalates until Garrett directly accuses Phil of using Cindy as a punching bag. Garrett also tells Phil he needs help and makes it clear that he is no longer frightened of him, though he still chooses not to become violent himself.

Before leaving, Garrett asks Hannah to wait in the car so he can speak to Cindy alone. He tells Cindy that Phil abused both him and his mother for years and says he recognizes the same fear in her. Garrett does not force her to act, but he tells Cindy the abuse is not her fault and urges her to call him if she ever needs help leaving or protecting herself; Cindy silently confirms his suspicions and thanks him.

On the drive back, Hannah admits she also suspected abuse after seeing bruises on Cindy’s wrists. Garrett is shaken by Cindy’s fear of him and worries that he might be capable of becoming like Phil, but Hannah firmly argues that Garrett’s self-control and refusal to hurt people he loves prove otherwise. To comfort him, she has him pull over, kisses him, and reassures him again; the moment turns intimate, and in the backseat they have sex. During the aftermath, Hannah tells Garrett she loves him, Garrett says he loves her too for the first time, and the chapter ends with both of them emotionally closer after Garrett’s confrontation with his past.
