Chapter 39

Overview

Phil Graham corners Hannah at work and demands that she break up with Garrett. He threatens to cut off Garrett's tuition and financial support if she refuses, then methodically destroys every alternative Hannah can think of. The chapter turns Garrett's abusive father into a direct force in the relationship, trapping Hannah between protecting Garrett's future and staying with the man she loves.

Summary

The morning after Garrett attacked Rob Delaney, Hannah leaves Garrett asleep in her bed and heads to her shift at the diner. Hannah is still shaken by the previous night, but she does not blame Garrett for losing control, and she is determined to help him stop seeing himself as a monster. Work immediately becomes hectic, and Hannah puts off dealing with Garrett's emotional fallout until later.

During a brief lull, Hannah is startled to find Phil Graham waiting for her at the counter. After getting permission for a short break, Hannah steps outside with him, where Phil quickly reveals that he has come to confront her about Garrett's fight. Phil frames Garrett's actions as proof that Hannah is distracting his son from hockey and school, and he says he no longer wants Garrett involved with her.

When Hannah objects that Phil cannot make that decision, Phil makes his real demand clear: Hannah must break up with Garrett and cut off all contact. After Hannah admits that she loves Garrett, Phil uses that love against her. He explains that Garrett's tuition, car, insurance, books, food, and other expenses are all funded by him, then threatens to cut Garrett off completely if Hannah refuses. Hannah mentally searches for alternatives, but Phil systematically eliminates each one, reminding her that Garrett does not qualify for financial aid, lacks documented income and credit for loans, and would likely have to sacrifice hockey if forced to support himself.

By the end of the confrontation, Hannah understands that Phil has deliberately trapped her. If she stays with Garrett, Garrett could lose the financial support that sustains both his education and hockey career; if she leaves him, Phil still gets what he wants. When Hannah asks how a father can be so cruel, Phil dismisses her and crudely reduces her to an obstacle in Garrett's future. He orders Hannah to end the relationship and warns her not to test him, leaving Hannah terrified because she believes he means every word.
