Chapter 11

Overview

A study session at Garrett’s house turns into an unexpectedly intimate night of pizza, Breaking Bad, and honest conversation. Garrett opens up about his father’s control and abuse, Hannah reveals her disappointment about missing Thanksgiving with her family, and their easy chemistry grows beyond tutoring or their fake-date arrangement. When Hannah stays over platonically after it gets too late to leave safely, their relationship shifts into something far more emotionally significant.

Summary

Hannah arrives at Garrett’s house for tutoring and asks if she accidentally left a coat there. Garrett is icing a large bruise from a hockey game, which leads to a conversation about why he plays. When Hannah asks whether Garrett’s famous father pushed him into hockey, Garrett admits that Phil Graham did force him into the sport early, but says he kept playing because he genuinely loves it. They then spend an intense hour studying ethics, with Hannah making Garrett explain the material in detail so he will be ready for the makeup exam.

After studying, Garrett invites Hannah to stay for pizza and television because he is starving and alone for the night. They order two pizzas to accommodate their different tastes and start watching Breaking Bad. The relaxed evening surprises Garrett because he enjoys simply hanging out with Hannah, and the two quickly fall into an easy rhythm of eating, watching episodes, and reacting together to the show’s twists.

As the binge-watch continues, their conversation becomes more personal and teasing. They joke about food, body types, and Garrett’s reputation with women, then argue lightly about Hannah’s interest in Justin Kohl. Garrett warns that Justin is not as decent as he appears, while Hannah defends him. When Hannah asks why Garrett never dates, Garrett says he does not want a relationship right now, and their banter turns flirtatious before settling back into comfortable friendship.

Later, while sharing popcorn, Hannah tells Garrett about her family’s dog, and Garrett responds with a story about his grandparents’ cat tormenting his father. The memory darkens Garrett’s mood because it brings back painful thoughts of Phil Graham’s abuse and of Garrett’s mother suffering for it. Hannah then admits she will not see her parents for Thanksgiving because they cannot afford the trip and she cannot afford to visit them, which reveals her own sadness about the holiday. Rather than stay in that heavy moment, Garrett restarts the show and they keep watching.

By the time they notice the hour, it is three in the morning. Hannah wants to call a cab, but Garrett refuses to let her travel alone across campus that late, and Hannah refuses to let him drive after drinking. To solve the problem, Hannah agrees to stay over. Garrett explains that sleeping in his room is safer than the living room because his drunken teammates might come home, gives Hannah a T-shirt and toothbrush, and the two go to sleep in the same bed with plenty of space between them. The night ends platonically, but it marks a major increase in trust and intimacy between them.
