Chapter 34

Overview

Late at night, Hannah throws herself into rehearsing for her solo while Garrett, bruised from a lost game, calls needing comfort and distraction. Their playful conversation gives way to a more vulnerable exchange about Garrett's father and the dread Garrett feels about going home for Thanksgiving. By asking Hannah to come with him and hearing her say yes, Garrett takes a major emotional risk and their relationship grows more serious.

Summary

After midnight, Hannah is still awake in her dorm, practicing her song instead of sleeping. Ever since Cass cut her from their showcase duet, Hannah has been overwhelmed by the pressure of balancing rehearsal, school, work, and her relationship with Garrett. When Garrett texts that he cannot sleep because his whole body hurts after a rough hockey loss, Hannah calls him.

On the phone, Hannah and Garrett joke flirtatiously, but the conversation turns more serious when Hannah asks whether Garrett's father attended the game. Garrett confirms that his father was there and says he never speaks to Garrett after a loss, revealing more bitterness and emotional strain around his family. Wanting a distraction from the pain, Garrett asks Hannah to put him on speaker and sing for him.

Hannah plays the song she is considering for the showcase and sings it several times while Garrett listens silently. As she works through the song, Hannah reflects that she is no longer as angry about losing the duet because Cass had turned it into a flashy performance she never wanted. Garrett stays on the line the entire time, and when Hannah finishes, he tells her her voice gives him chills, encouraging her as she continues refining the arrangement.

Just before they hang up, Garrett stops Hannah and, after a long hesitation, asks if she will come home with him for Thanksgiving. The request exposes how much he dreads facing his abusive father alone. When Garrett admits that he cannot go back there by himself, Hannah immediately agrees, deepening their emotional bond and setting up a major step in their relationship.
