Chapter 37
Overview
Hannah and Garrett begin the chapter in a happy, intimate place, with both of them focused on finals, hockey, and Hannah’s revived excitement for her solo showcase. That sense of stability is shattered after Briar’s game, when Hannah unexpectedly sees both Phil Graham and Rob Delaney, a witness from her rape case.
Rob’s appearance forces Hannah to confront a piece of her trauma she has not had to face in a long time. The chapter ends with Garrett learning who Rob is and moving toward him, turning Hannah’s private shock into a potentially explosive confrontation.
Summary
In Garrett’s room, Hannah and Garrett share an easy, playful sexual moment that shows how comfortable and affectionate they have become with each other. Afterward, Hannah reflects that a week has passed since Thanksgiving and that their relationship still feels strong. She is busy helping Garrett with schoolwork while preparing for the showcase herself, and she feels newly energized about performing because she and Jae have created an arrangement she loves.
Hannah also thinks about the unresolved tensions around her music group. She has not forgiven Cass and Mary Jane for abandoning her, even though Mary Jane has tried to reach out, and Fiona’s help has allowed Hannah to rehearse elsewhere. Hannah is also happy that her parents will meet her at Aunt Nicole’s for Christmas, though Garrett cannot join her because of his hockey schedule. When Logan knocks on Garrett’s door to hurry him along, Hannah and Garrett part ways for their separate commitments, planning to meet later at the hockey game.
After rehearsal, Hannah arrives at the arena during the third period and finds Briar in a tighter game than expected against Buffalo State. She sits with Natalie, Birdie’s longtime girlfriend, and they watch nervously as Briar tries to break the tie. Garrett’s strong shift helps create the winning play when his shot produces a rebound that Birdie scores on, giving Briar a 2-1 victory. As Hannah and Natalie leave the stands to meet the players, Natalie tells Hannah that Garrett seems happier and less tightly wound because of their relationship.
That good mood collapses when Hannah spots Phil Graham in the crowd and then accidentally runs into Rob Delaney. Rob is Aaron’s best friend and one of the people who testified against Hannah after her rape, and seeing him sends her into shock. Garrett immediately realizes something is terribly wrong and presses Hannah for an explanation. When Hannah finally identifies Rob and reveals his connection to Aaron and the trial, Garrett reacts at once and stalks away toward Rob.
