Chapter 7

Overview

Hannah’s first tutoring session at Garrett’s townhouse goes better than she expects: after meeting his flirtatious roommates, she discovers that Garrett is far smarter and more capable than his failed exam suggested. Their study session is interrupted by sexual texts from one of Garrett’s hookups, but Hannah’s sharp intervention turns the moment into a point of reluctant camaraderie. By the end of the chapter, Hannah has revised her view of Garrett, and their deal begins to shift from pure inconvenience into a more charged, personal connection.

Summary

Hannah drives to Garrett’s townhouse for their first tutoring session and immediately regrets agreeing to their deal. On the way in, Hannah reflects that her fixation on Justin Kohl pushed her into accepting Garrett’s offer, and she thinks about her former therapist, Carole, who urged her to reclaim control of her life after the rape. Hannah tells herself that pursuing the attraction she feels toward Justin might be part of moving forward.

At the house, Hannah meets Garrett’s roommates. Dean answers the door and mistakes Hannah for a stripper because she is still wearing her waitress uniform, which irritates her. Garrett introduces Logan and Tucker in the living room, and the group quickly starts calling Hannah “Wellsy,” showing the casual, teasing dynamic of the house. Although Hannah is uneasy when Garrett suggests they go to his room, the stop in the living room and the joking introductions lower the tension slightly.

Upstairs, Hannah changes into casual clothes in Garrett’s bathroom and then starts the session. Because the only practical place to sit is Garrett’s bed, they study there while Hannah works through Tolbert’s ethics material with him. Garrett jokes that he cannot read, but once he starts, Hannah discovers he is articulate, quick with facts, and able to summarize Kant accurately. That changes Hannah’s opinion of him: Garrett is not stupid, but he struggles more with applying ideas than memorizing them.

As they continue, Garrett keeps getting texts, which disrupts the lesson. Hannah finally grabs his phone and sees that a woman is sending him sexual messages, while Garrett has actually been trying to put her off because he is studying. Hannah sends a blunt reply as “Garrett’s tutor,” making Garrett laugh and briefly shifting their dynamic from combative to amused cooperation. Their conversation about the woman being a “puck bunny” also highlights Garrett’s casual, sometimes crude attitude toward women, which Hannah dislikes.

By the end of the hour, Hannah is satisfied that Garrett genuinely understands the material on Kant and Bentham, not just by rote memorization. They schedule another session for the next night to cover postmodernism. Before Hannah leaves, Garrett goes through her iPod, mocks her taste in music, and promises to make her a better playlist, ending the evening with more playful irritation and proof that their arrangement will force them into closer contact.
