Epilogue
Overview
In the epilogue, Garrett celebrates Briar’s championship win with Hannah and his teammates, capping both his athletic season and his personal growth. The chapter reveals that Garrett has finally told the team and Coach the truth about Phil, and their support helps him sever his emotional hold on him. By refusing to look back at his father, Garrett embraces a future built around his own choices, his team, and Hannah.
Summary
After Briar wins the Frozen Four championship in Philadelphia, Garrett leaves the arena with his teammates and sees Dean carrying a boom box while their friends and families applaud. Garrett reflects on the scale of the victory: Briar shuts out its opponent, Simms allows no goals, and the team’s scoring comes from Garrett, Tuck, and Birdie. The championship gives Garrett a sense of pride in both himself and the team he led there.
Hannah runs to Garrett and celebrates with him. Garrett jokes that the finger-gun gesture after his goal was meant for Hannah, and Hannah teases him by saying he was actually pointing at an older man in the crowd, who believed the goal had been dedicated to him. Their playful exchange shows that, after all their past complications, Garrett and Hannah are now openly affectionate and happy together.
While celebrating, Garrett notices his father, Phil Graham, waiting near the bus, but Garrett deliberately avoids him. Garrett explains that after New Year’s, a conversation with Hannah about unfairness and Phil’s public reputation pushed Garrett to tell his teammates and Coach the truth about his father. The confession was painful, but it changed Garrett’s relationship with the team, because they responded with loyalty and solidarity rather than judgment.
That support is visible now when none of Garrett’s teammates acknowledge Phil. Garrett says goodbye to Hannah, makes plans to see her back on campus, and boards the bus to sit beside Logan. As the bus pulls away, Garrett refuses to look back at Phil, ending the chapter with a clear emotional decision to stop letting his father define him and to focus instead on his future.
