Chapter 30
Overview
Hannah goes to Harvard to watch Garrett play and is thrilled by the game, but the trip also forces her to admit she is still uncertain about what Garrett is to her and whether she should keep her planned date with Justin. After Briar wins, Garrett’s abusive father corners him and uses money and intimidation to force him home for Thanksgiving, showing that Garrett is still trapped by his father’s control. On the bus back, Logan reveals that Justin claims he is taking Hannah out, turning the chapter into a double blow for Garrett and sharpening the unresolved tension between him and Hannah.
Summary
Hannah drives Garrett’s Jeep to Harvard with Allie, Dexter, and Stella, who are all thrilled to be included and increasingly skeptical of Hannah’s claim that she and Garrett only "hang out." At the arena, Hannah experiences her first live hockey game and is struck by the speed, noise, and Garrett’s presence on the ice. She watches him closely as Briar battles Harvard, and after Harvard ties the game in the first period, Briar eventually pulls out a satisfying win.
During the game, Hannah enjoys explaining hockey to Dexter and joking with her friends, but her mood shifts when she suddenly remembers that she has a dinner date with Justin on Sunday. That reminder forces Hannah to confront her uncertainty about Garrett. Even though her attraction to Garrett is intense and their emotional bond has deepened, Garrett has not defined their relationship, so Hannah wonders if she should still give Justin a chance before deciding what she really wants.
After the game, Garrett finds Hannah waiting outside with her friends. He kisses her, which confirms their chemistry to everyone watching, but when Hannah teases him about calling them an "us," it becomes clear that neither of them has fully named the relationship. Garrett starts to ask Hannah to see him the next night, but the moment is interrupted when his father, Phil Graham, appears and summons him aside.
Phil tells Garrett that he is expected home for Thanksgiving because Phil’s girlfriend wants him there. When Garrett refuses, Phil becomes threatening and reminds him that he still pays Garrett’s tuition and expenses. Because Garrett does not yet have enough money to cover the next term on his own, Phil’s financial control traps him, and Garrett reluctantly gives in. Shaken, Garrett returns to Hannah, pretends everything is fine, and leaves on the team bus. Near the end of the ride home, Logan tells Garrett that Justin Kohl claimed he is going out with Hannah that weekend, which leaves Garrett rattled and unsure whether Hannah is still pursuing Justin.
