Chapter 23
Overview
Garrett spends the day reeling from Hannah's revelation about her rape, torn between rage at what happened to her and fear that he will fail her when she comes over to have sex. He admits to Logan that his feelings for Hannah are real, then secretly asks Birdie for advice by pretending he needs help with a virgin's first time.
Birdie's guidance helps Garrett reframe the situation: Hannah is not broken, but she does need safety, patience, and trust. The chapter marks a shift from Garrett's desire and panic toward a more serious commitment to protecting Hannah's comfort and emotional well-being.
Summary
The morning after Hannah tells Garrett she was drugged and raped at fifteen, Garrett goes to the weight room consumed by anger and protectiveness. He keeps replaying Hannah's confession and is glad she did not give him the rapist's name, because he knows he would be tempted to hunt the man down. At the same time, Garrett is overwhelmed by the fact that Hannah now wants to try having sex with him, and he worries that she sees him as the person who is supposed to fix what was damaged.
While Logan spots him on the bench press, Garrett struggles to focus. Logan confronts Garrett for claiming he was not interested in Hannah, and Garrett admits that he is interested in her now. Logan jokes about wanting permission to date Hannah later if Garrett and Hannah break up, and Garrett grudgingly agrees, though the idea bothers him. As he thinks more clearly, Garrett reminds himself that Hannah is not broken; he decides her real problem is trust and confidence, not some permanent damage.
Even with that realization, Garrett still doubts whether he is the right person to help her. Because he does not want to reveal Hannah's trauma, he approaches Birdie privately after the workout and asks whether Birdie has ever slept with a virgin. Birdie confirms that his girlfriend Natalie was a virgin when they first had sex, which gives Garrett a safer way to ask for advice without betraying Hannah's story.
Birdie tells Garrett that the most important thing is making the woman feel comfortable and tailoring the experience to what kind of person she is. When Garrett considers Hannah, he quickly realizes she would want a low-key, pressure-free situation rather than anything overly romantic or ceremonial. Birdie adds that Garrett should go slowly and include plenty of foreplay, then reminds him that sex is supposed to be fun.
After Birdie leaves, Garrett is still anxious, but he clings to the simple guidance he has been given. He prepares himself to focus on Hannah's comfort and safety when she comes over that night. The chapter ends with Garrett hoping he can live up to what Hannah is asking of him.
