Chapter 21
Overview
After Hannah gets extremely drunk at the after-party, Garrett takes charge and keeps her safe by bringing her upstairs instead of letting the night spiral further. Hannah's sleepy confession that she might be broken deepens Garrett's concern about what is haunting her. When she later tries to have sex with him, Garrett refuses to take advantage of her, proving that his feelings for Hannah are tied to genuine respect and trust.
Summary
After the bar outing turns into a party at Garrett's house, Garrett realizes Hannah is far too drunk and refuses to go back to her dorm. When Dean starts dancing closely with her in the living room, Garrett pulls Hannah away and takes her upstairs, deciding the situation is getting out of control. In his room, he tries to send her home, but Hannah is exhausted and quickly starts falling asleep, so Garrett decides it is safer to let her stay the night.
Garrett gives Hannah ibuprofen and water to reduce her hangover, then helps her get more comfortable when she complains about the heat. While half-asleep, Hannah blurts out that she might be broken but can still have fun. The comment unsettles Garrett because it suggests something deeper is wrong, but Hannah passes out before he can ask what she means.
Still rattled by Hannah's tears at the bar and by his growing feelings for her, Garrett goes back downstairs and starts taking shots with Dean and Logan. He drinks enough to stop thinking clearly, and by the time he returns to his room hours later, the party is nearly over and most of the house has gone quiet.
Garrett climbs into bed beside Hannah, but she wakes and begins kissing and touching him. Hannah makes it clear that she wants sex, and Garrett is strongly tempted, but he knows she is too drunk to consent. Even though he wants her badly, Garrett stops her, tells her they cannot do this that night, and reminds himself that protecting Hannah matters more than his own desire.
Hannah accepts Garrett's refusal without a fight, curls up against him, and falls asleep almost immediately. Garrett is left awake, aroused, and even more aware of how much he cares about her. The night confirms both Hannah's vulnerability and Garrett's determination not to betray her trust.
