Chapter 5
Overview
At a Sigma party, Hannah tries to push past her anxiety, gives Allie permission to stop guarding her, and finally gets a promising one-on-one conversation with Justin Kohl. That hope collapses when Garrett corners her, correctly reads her crush, and bluntly tells her Justin goes for higher-status girls, sending Hannah out of the party humiliated. Garrett then follows her outside, apologizes in his awkward way, revives his fake-dating idea, and talks her into accepting a ride home, keeping their conflict and connection very much alive.
Summary
At the Sigma party, Hannah stays near the wall with Allie, who refuses to leave her alone. Feeling guilty that Allie is missing time with Sean, Hannah insists that Allie go have fun and promises she will be fine. Left by herself, Hannah grows self-conscious about the attention her dress draws and is approached by Jimmy, a fraternity member from her British Lit class.
While talking to Jimmy, Hannah spots Garrett arriving and immediately tries to avoid him. Jimmy admits he dislikes Garrett and tells Hannah that Garrett is the son of famous former hockey player Phil Graham, which reinforces Hannah's impression that Garrett is entitled. To keep Garrett from cornering her, Hannah agrees to dance with Jimmy, then escapes afterward by pretending she needs the bathroom.
Allie soon finds Hannah, teases her about Justin, and then Justin finally arrives at the party. Encouraged by Allie, Hannah stays longer and lets Allie stop babysitting her so closely. Later, after waiting in line for the bathroom, Hannah accidentally bumps into Justin in the hallway, and the two have a friendly private conversation about their ethics class, their grades, and football. Justin invites Hannah to come to one of his games, which makes Hannah think she may finally be making progress with him.
When Hannah returns to the living room, Garrett blocks her path and again presses her to tutor him. Hannah is distracted because Justin is now talking closely with another woman, and Garrett notices exactly where Hannah is looking. He bluntly guesses that Hannah wants Justin and tells her that Justin is not her type because he goes for women with a certain social status. Hurt and embarrassed, Hannah decides to leave the party rather than watch Justin flirt with someone else.
Outside, Garrett follows Hannah and tries to explain that he was only being honest, not cruel. He says that if Hannah wants Justin's attention, she needs to do something drastic, and he renews his offer to go out with her. Hannah rejects the idea again and tries to call a campus cab, but Garrett insists on driving her home instead. After proving he has barely been drinking and even telling her to photograph him for safety, Garrett finally persuades Hannah to accept the ride, though she makes clear that this does not mean she will tutor him.
