In the hockey locker room, Garrett is thrilled to see Hannah even though she arrives furious. Hannah confronts Garrett for spreading a campus rumor that other guys should stay away from her, and Garrett admits he did it because he believed Hannah still loved him and would only hurt herself by pretending to move on. His teasing defuses some of Hannah's anger, but the argument remains unresolved.

When Coach Jensen briefly interrupts, Garrett brushes him off and stops Hannah from escaping. Garrett refuses to accept Hannah's earlier excuses for the breakup and keeps demanding the truth. After kissing him back just as desperately as he kisses her, Hannah finally admits that Garrett's father told her to end their relationship.

In Hannah's dorm room, Hannah explains Phil Graham's threats in full and says she broke up with Garrett because she loved him and wanted to protect his future in hockey. Garrett listens, then reveals that Phil's leverage never really mattered: Garrett's grandparents left him a trust fund that becomes available when he turns twenty-one, enough to cover school and living expenses. Garrett says he is frustrated Hannah did not trust him with the truth, but he understands that she acted out of love.

Garrett adds that he has already sent Phil repayment money and that Cindy has left Phil, further weakening Phil's control. Realizing the breakup was unnecessary, Hannah apologizes, and Garrett makes clear that, to him, they were never truly over. Their tension turns affectionate and playful, and they fully reconcile, ending the chapter by telling each other they love each other.
