Chapter 41

Overview

Still devastated a week after ending things with Garrett, Hannah drags herself through the winter showcase while trying to live with the lie Phil forced her to tell. Backstage, the fallout from Cass and Mary Jane's betrayal resurfaces, but the real turning point comes when Hannah channels her heartbreak into a performance that earns a standing ovation. Garrett's surprise appearance afterward shifts the story again, because he bluntly tells Hannah he knows she lied about the breakup and is determined to uncover the truth.

Summary

A week after breaking up with Garrett, Hannah feels hollow and miserable. She knows Phil Graham forced her into the breakup, and Garrett's hurt reaction keeps replaying in her head. Even getting ready for the winter showcase with Allie feels pointless, because Hannah no longer cares about the performance she spent the semester working toward.

Backstage, Hannah runs into Cass, who remains smug and unapologetic about taking over the duet arrangement. She then meets Mary Jane, who tearfully admits Cass persuaded her to betray Hannah and that he dumped her as soon as he secured the solo. Hannah accepts that Mary Jane is sorry, but because the betrayal still hurts, Hannah refuses to pretend their friendship can immediately be repaired.

While waiting with Jae, Hannah reflects on why she ended things with Garrett. She reminds herself that she lied in order to protect Garrett's future from Phil's threats, because Garrett would have chosen Hannah over hockey, school, and financial stability if he knew the truth. During Cass's performance of Mary Jane's song, Hannah recognizes his technical skill but feels that something emotional is missing.

When Hannah finally takes the stage with Jae, her grief breaks through. Thinking of Garrett and everything she has lost, Hannah pours that pain into her ballad, using the song as an expression of love and heartbreak. The performance lands powerfully, and when the song ends, the audience rises for a standing ovation.

Although Dexter and Fiona enthusiastically praise Hannah, the success does nothing to ease her pain, and she tries to run out before the rest of the event. At the exit, Hannah literally collides with Garrett, who reveals that he was in the audience. After asking whether she has dated anyone since the breakup and hearing that she has not, Garrett tells Hannah he spent the week analyzing their split and has concluded that she lied about wanting other people. He does not yet know why Hannah pushed him away, but he makes clear that he intends to find out.
