Garrett wakes to find Hannah asleep in his arms after their late-night study session turned into an accidental cuddle. Hannah is mortified by his morning erection and by the idea that anyone might think she is another one of Garrett’s hookups, so she makes him promise to drive her back to her dorm before his teammates can see her leaving. Garrett jokes about it, but privately realizes he likes having Hannah close and misses her warmth as soon as she pulls away.

Later, Hannah struggles through the day on very little sleep. Before ethics class, she runs into Justin Kohl, who notices her, compliments her rain boots, and reveals that he looked for her at the Sigma party after she left. When Justin brings up hearing that she left with Garrett, Hannah flirts back, and the conversation suggests Justin is about to ask her out.

Garrett interrupts by arriving with coffee for Hannah, immediately changing the dynamic between the three of them. In class, Garrett sits beside Hannah instead of staying in his usual place, openly acting familiar with her in front of Nell and within Justin’s view. This public closeness reinforces the impression that Hannah and Garrett have a connection, which seems to keep Justin off balance.

After Professor Tolbert’s lecture, Hannah wants to continue talking to Justin, but Garrett hustles her out of the room. Garrett argues that because Justin is finally interested, Hannah should stay hard to get instead of making things easy for him, and Hannah reluctantly accepts that his strategy might be working. She cancels that evening’s tutoring because she is exhausted, assigning Garrett a practice essay instead, and they arrange to meet the next day.

At rehearsal, Hannah expects another fight with Cass over their winter showcase song, but learns he has skipped practice. MJ then admits that Cass asked her out before the rehearsal where she backed his choir idea, making Hannah realize Cass may be using MJ’s feelings to win support. Although Hannah urges MJ to speak honestly, MJ remains hesitant, and Hannah concludes that Cass will probably get his way and force the choir into their performance.
