Chapter 40
Overview
After days of distance, Garrett confronts Hannah and is blindsided when she ends their relationship. Under pressure from Phil's blackmail, Hannah conceals the real reason and tells Garrett she wants to slow down and see other people, which leaves him feeling rejected and betrayed.
The breakup marks a major rupture in their relationship because Garrett believes Hannah is choosing other possibilities over him, not sacrificing the relationship to protect him. His angry exit and turn to Logan for whiskey underline how completely the split shatters him.
Summary
After several days of being ignored, Garrett decides Hannah is deliberately avoiding him. He assumes her distance is connected to his violent attack on Rob Delaney, and the possibility that Hannah might now fear him deeply unsettles him. To force an honest conversation, he goes to her dorm unannounced after confirming with Allie that Hannah is there.
In Hannah's room, Garrett immediately senses that something is wrong. Hannah apologizes for acting strangely and says she has been thinking, then tells him she does not think they should keep seeing each other. Hannah is actually pushing him away because Phil Graham has threatened Garrett's tuition, support, and future, but she hides that reason and instead claims their relationship has become too serious too quickly.
Garrett first tries to negotiate, asking if slowing things down would help, but Hannah escalates the breakup by saying she wants them to see other people. She insists that college should be a time to explore and that, because Garrett is only her second serious relationship, she does not know whether something better might exist. Garrett, already wounded, bluntly restates her meaning as wanting to date and sleep with other men in case she finds someone better than him, and Hannah silently confirms it.
The confirmation devastates Garrett. Feeling betrayed and unable to believe Hannah's explanation, he says he cannot look at her and leaves. Before going, he lashes out and calls Hannah a coward, accusing her of hiding behind a false image of strength. The breakup leaves him emotionally wrecked.
Back at the house, Garrett goes straight to Logan's room looking for whiskey. He admits that Hannah dumped him but is too hurt to explain the details. Logan reacts with sympathy rather than judgment, takes the bottle, and decides to drink with Garrett, ending the chapter with Garrett seeking numbness and support after the collapse of the relationship.
