Chapter 26

Overview

Hannah admits to Allie that she and Garrett are physically involved, and her guilt over Justin shows that her fake-dating arrangement has become emotionally complicated. At rehearsal, Hannah's growing detachment from Cass's chaotic duet highlights her frustration and loss of control in that part of her life. When Garrett confronts Cass after rehearsal and then takes Hannah home with him, the chapter confirms that Hannah and Garrett's connection is intensifying both sexually and emotionally.

Summary

Hannah rushes into the apartment on her way to rehearsal, but Allie stops her and demands to know what is happening with Garrett. After trying to deny it, Hannah admits that she is not dating Garrett but that they are fooling around. Allie is thrilled and pushes for sexual details, but Hannah refuses to share them. During the conversation, Hannah is forced to confront an uncomfortable truth: since the night at Garrett's, she has barely thought about Justin, and the idea of going on her planned date with him now makes her feel guilty.

At rehearsal, Hannah finds that Cass and Mary Jane have added yet another new element to the performance, a cellist named Kim Jae Woo. Instead of fighting the latest change, Hannah feels detached and resigned, having lost enthusiasm for the song because of Cass's increasingly theatrical control. Cass spends the rehearsal criticizing the nervous freshman accompanist, and Hannah takes comfort only in the possibility that if this performance fails, she will still have another chance to compete later in the spring.

When rehearsal ends, Hannah discovers Garrett waiting outside with coffee. He explains that he stopped by her room, learned where she was, and came to meet her after rehearsal. Their easy exchange quickly shifts when Cass and Mary Jane come out into the hall. Hannah introduces Garrett to Cass, and Garrett immediately needles him by repeatedly calling him "Chazz" and warning him not to mistreat Hannah.

Cass tries to assert himself, but Garrett's confidence throws him off, and Cass leaves with Mary Jane. Although Hannah is embarrassed by Garrett's possessiveness, she is also amused and clearly affected by his protectiveness. Once Cass is gone, the sexual tension between Hannah and Garrett flares again. Garrett quietly invites Hannah to come to his place, and Hannah answers by throwing away both cups of coffee, making it clear she wants him just as much.
