Chapter 9

Overview

Garrett helps Briar shut out St. Anthony's 3-0, but the bigger conflict is off the ice: Phil Graham's cold presence reminds Garrett how deeply his father's approval still haunts him. In the locker room, Logan's interest in Hannah exposes Garrett's growing attachment and jealousy, showing that his relationship with her is becoming more emotionally complicated. The chapter ties Garrett's athletic success to the pressure threatening it, since the looming Ethics makeup exam could bench him despite the win.

Summary

In a road game against St. Anthony's, Garrett Graham helps Briar build and protect a lead while dealing with the physical threat of Greg Braxton, a huge, penalty-prone opponent. Braxton slams Garrett hard into the glass, but Garrett still gets the puck away and Tucker scores. Briar ends the second period up 2-0, and Coach Jensen keeps the team focused by criticizing mistakes instead of letting the players relax.

As Garrett returns to the ice, he feels his father watching from the stands. Garrett reflects on how Phil Graham attends every game not out of affection, but to watch Garrett as an extension of his own hockey legacy. Garrett tries to block out the resentment and pressure, reminding himself that his father no longer matters to him, even though Phil's presence still affects him.

In the third period, St. Anthony's presses hard to avoid a shutout, but Briar withstands the pressure. Logan wins a battle behind Briar's net, Birdie and Tucker push the puck up ice, and Garrett joins the rush. When Braxton charges after him, Garrett makes the smart play, then finishes the sequence by scoring on Tucker's return pass. Briar wins 3-0, giving the team another early-season victory and more confidence about the season.

After the game, Logan asks Garrett about Hannah Wells and admits he finds her attractive. Garrett says Hannah is single but interested in someone else, then reacts with unexpected tension when Logan treats her as available. Garrett realizes the idea of Logan hooking up with Hannah bothers him because he likes her company and is still affected by hearing her sing. Leaving the arena, Garrett gets only a curt nod from Phil Graham, a familiar sign of conditional approval after a win. On the bus ride out, Garrett is relieved to leave his father behind, though he remembers that failing the upcoming Ethics makeup exam could cost him hockey eligibility.
