Chapter 15: Joyce
Overview
Joyce steps away from the murder investigation to describe her weekly minibus trip to Fairhaven, revealing her observant, sociable nature and the routines of Coopers Chase residents. Beneath the gentle humor, Tony Curran’s violent death continues to dominate village gossip, showing that the murder has unsettled even ordinary routines.
The chapter also introduces Bernard’s grief-filled visits to Fairhaven, adding emotional texture to the community Joyce is becoming part of.
Summary
Joyce narrates her regular Wednesday routine of taking the residents’ minibus from Coopers Chase into Fairhaven for shopping. She prefers Fairhaven to Tunbridge Wells because it feels younger, has seagulls, and includes a vegan café where she looks forward to mint tea and an almond-flour brownie.
Joyce reflects on the other regular passengers, including Peter and Carol, Sir Nicholas, Naomi, an unnamed woman from Wordsworth, and Carlito, the driver whom residents assume is Spanish though Joyce knows he is Portuguese. Her observations are affectionate and curious, showing her interest in the lives around her.
Joyce thinks especially about Bernard, who sits at the back of the bus and visits Fairhaven because of memories of his late wife. Bernard used to drink at the Adelphi Hotel where his wife worked, but since it became a Travelodge, he now sits on the renovated pier; Joyce wonders whether she should sit beside him one day.
Although Joyce is looking forward to peace, she notes that Coopers Chase is still consumed by gossip about Tony Curran’s murder. The chapter closes with Joyce promising to report back if anything happens, linking her quiet outing to the wider atmosphere of suspicion and curiosity after Tony’s death.
