Chapter 51: Joyce
Overview
Joyce resumes the graveyard standoff as Bernard and Ron refuse to yield, turning the protest into a principled stand against Ian Ventham’s attempt to dig up the Garden of Eternal Rest. Father Mackie’s arrival strengthens the residents’ position and gives the conflict a moral and religious authority.
When Ventham spots Father Mackie and charges over with Chris, Donna and Ibrahim behind him, the confrontation escalates from blockade to direct showdown. The chapter positions the graveyard as the next battleground in both the murder investigation and the fight over Coopers Chase’s future.
Summary
Joyce briefly digresses after answering the door for a neighbor’s parcel, then returns to the confrontation at the graveyard. Bernard refuses to move or obey police orders, making clear that he intends to keep blocking access to the Garden of Eternal Rest.
Ron reinforces the mood of resistance by recalling an old protest in which he was chained to a pit shaft for forty-eight hours. Father Mackie then introduces himself to the group guarding the graveyard.
Father Mackie politely thanks Bernard, Ron and the others for protecting the Garden. Bernard frames the fight as a matter of principle, warning that yielding even a little to Ian Ventham would invite more abuse of power. Ron, despite making a pointed comment about Catholics and graveyards, agrees that Ventham is taking a liberty and must be stopped.
Father Mackie declares that the digging will not happen on his watch. When Ian Ventham sees Father Mackie, Ventham rushes over, followed by Chris, Donna and Ibrahim, bringing all sides together for the confrontation Joyce describes as a stage now being set.
