Chapter 115: Joyce

Overview

Joyce recounts the aftermath of the solved cases: Penny and John are buried, the press moves on, and Joyce privately judges Penny’s revenge against Peter Mercer as morally justified. She also questions the police theory about Turkish Johnny and strongly suspects Bogdan killed Tony Curran.

The chapter resolves several emotional and practical threads: Joanna’s company has bought the development, saved the graveyard, and revealed how deeply Coopers Chase has restored Joyce’s life. Maggie and Patrick are honored, Bernard and Asima’s ashes are secretly united, and the Thursday Murder Club continues into a new mystery when Elizabeth receives an unexplained note.

Summary

Joyce resumes writing after a busy period and reports that Penny and John have been buried in a quiet, rainy funeral attended by some of Penny’s old colleagues. The press has partly uncovered the story, and Ron handles attention from reporters with typical bluntness. Elizabeth does not attend, and Joyce wonders whether Elizabeth has already said goodbye or is still wounded by Penny’s lifelong secret.

Joyce reflects on the chain of violence: Peter Mercer murdered Annie Madeley, Penny killed Peter Mercer, and John killed Ian Ventham to protect Penny after dementia exposed what Penny had done. Joyce privately believes Penny was right, though she recognizes that Elizabeth may feel hurt by the deception. Meanwhile, the police are still looking for Turkish Johnny, but Joyce doubts the theory that Johnny killed Tony Curran and increasingly suspects Bogdan, while deciding not to confront him before he finishes her window.

Hillcrest is already being built, Gordon Playfair has sold his land, and Gordon has moved into Larkin Court. Joyce then reveals that Bramley Holdings is Joanna’s company: after seeing Ian Ventham’s accounts, Joanna and Cornelius recognized the opportunity and bought the development from Gemma Ventham. Joanna explains that she bought it partly to thank Coopers Chase for restoring Joyce’s happiness after Gerry’s death, while also admitting there is money to be made.

Joanna’s ownership protects the Garden of Eternal Rest, and The Woodlands development is quietly shelved. Elizabeth invites Matthew Mackie to lunch, and the group tells Matthew that Maggie’s grave is safe. Matthew visits the grave, where Bogdan has cleaned Margaret Farrell’s inscription and added Patrick’s name; Matthew breaks down, and Ron comforts him while the others wait nearby.

Bogdan later retrieves the tiger tea caddy from beneath Bernard and Asima’s bench. Joyce interprets Bernard’s final note as an instruction, mixes half of Bernard’s ashes with half of Asima’s, and has the tea caddy reburied beneath the bench. The remaining mixed ashes are unknowingly taken by Sudhi and Majid to Fairhaven, fulfilling Bernard and Asima’s wishes in Joyce’s own secret way.

Finally, Elizabeth tells Joyce that someone has slipped an intriguing note under Elizabeth’s door, but Elizabeth withholds the details until after a visit. Joyce prepares to attend the Thursday Murder Club, reassured that despite the revelations about Penny, the club continues: mysteries arrive, suspects linger nearby, and life at Coopers Chase goes on.
