Chapter 61

Overview

Donna identifies Jason Ritchie as the person who called Tony Curran three times on the morning of Tony’s murder, while Chris confirms Jason’s car was also outside Tony’s house that day. The combined phone and vehicle evidence makes Jason a major new suspect, shifting the police investigation toward confronting him directly.

Chris tries to handle the questioning alone, but Donna’s initiative and persistence force Chris to include her, strengthening her role in the investigation.

Summary

As Chris Hudson leaves the station, Donna De Freitas stops him with information from the call logs. Donna has recognized the mobile number that called Tony Curran on the morning Tony was murdered: it belongs to Jason Ritchie.

Chris compares Donna’s finding with the vehicle records Terry Hallet gave him. Those records show that Jason Ritchie’s car was outside Tony Curran’s house on the day of the murder, connecting Jason to both repeated phone calls and the crime scene.

Chris initially tries to keep the visit low-key and go alone to question Jason at home. Donna insists on coming, arguing that she is Chris’s shadow and that her discovery is crucial. When Donna reveals that Jason is not at home and that she already knows where Jason is, Chris gives in and tells Donna to drive.
