Chapter 22
Overview
Joyce’s haircut becomes an informal listening post as Anthony circulates garbled rumors about Tony Curran’s death. Elizabeth’s eavesdropping confirms that local gossip is active but unreliable, and she interrupts to pull Joyce back into club business.
The chapter reinforces the club’s method: even casual social routines can become sources of intelligence, though the group must separate fact from rumor.
Summary
Joyce is at her coveted first appointment with Anthony, the mobile hairdresser who visits Coopers Chase on Thursdays and Fridays. Joyce likes booking early because Anthony is a reliable source of gossip, and Elizabeth waits just outside the open doorway to listen before interrupting.
Anthony chats playfully about Joyce’s hair, then turns to Tony Curran’s murder. His version of events is wildly inaccurate: Anthony has heard that Tony was shot on the seafront by men on motorbikes, while Joyce gently corrects him that Tony was bludgeoned in his kitchen.
The conversation shows that rumors about the murder are spreading through Coopers Chase, but the gossip contains little useful information. Anthony admits he found Tony attractive despite believing Tony was “a wrong ’un,” and Joyce agrees with the sentiment while maintaining that the murder is sad.
Elizabeth, impatient with the lack of useful intelligence and aware of the time, decides to stop listening. Elizabeth enters the salon, greets Anthony, and tells him he must release Joyce because Elizabeth needs her. Joyce is delighted, suggesting the investigation is about to resume.
