Chapter 93

Overview

Elizabeth stages an unofficial confrontation in the chapel confessional, using her old psychological methods to draw out Matthew Mackie. Her suspicions now center on Matthew’s hidden identity, his connection to Ian Ventham, the chapel photograph, and the disturbed graveyard.

The chapter shifts the investigation toward a risky private interrogation, with Elizabeth aware that Matthew may be coming either to confess or to silence her. Her moment of doubt links the case to her fear that her investigative gifts may be fading.

Summary

Elizabeth prepares the old confessional stall in the chapel at Coopers Chase, which is normally used for cleaning supplies. Joyce has helped Elizabeth clear it out, and Elizabeth makes the space unexpectedly comfortable and deliberate by cleaning it and adding cushions.

Elizabeth reflects on her past interrogation methods, which relied on psychology rather than procedure, lawyers, or force. Her strategy has always been to unsettle people with a tailored approach and let them feel they are choosing to reveal the truth.

Elizabeth knows Donna and Chris would not approve of what she is about to do, but she hopes a successful result will earn their forgiveness. She also worries that her instincts may be failing, since she was wrong about Ian Ventham murdering Tony Curran.

Elizabeth focuses on Matthew Mackie as a different kind of suspect: a man connected to a struggle with Ventham, visible in an old chapel photograph, both priest and not priest, and apparently someone who has hidden his trail. The graveyard excavation may have exposed something tied to Matthew, and Elizabeth wonders whether Matthew is coming to confess, to discover what Elizabeth knows, or to kill her with fentanyl.

Alone in the cold chapel, Elizabeth briefly thinks of Stephen despite not fearing death. As she waits for Matthew Mackie to arrive, the confrontation is poised to reveal whether Elizabeth still has the skill to draw out the truth.
