Chapter 99
Overview
Matthew Mackie leads Elizabeth through the cemetery after their long exchange, not to the older graves but to the grave of Sister Margaret Anne, revealing a deeply personal focal point for him. The tense encounter resolves without immediate violence as Elizabeth’s rescue party arrives, confirming that Elizabeth had prepared for danger and that Mackie’s story is not yet finished.
Summary
Elizabeth walks with Matthew Mackie along the familiar curving path to the Garden of Eternal Rest. Mackie guides Elizabeth with a hand at Elizabeth’s back, and the silence of the place makes the walk feel tense and final. Elizabeth notices a remaining strip of police crime tape, recalling how recently the cemetery was part of the investigation.
As Elizabeth and Mackie pass Bernard’s bench, Elizabeth reflects on Bernard’s absence. The empty bench emphasizes another death and the irreversible losses surrounding Coopers Chase and the cemetery.
Inside the Garden of Eternal Rest, Mackie does not take Elizabeth to the older graves where earlier secrets were connected. Instead, Mackie follows his usual route between newer headstones and stops at the grave of Sister Margaret Anne, whose inscription identifies her as Margaret Farrell, 1948–1971. Elizabeth takes Mackie’s hand, and Mackie calls the place beautiful.
The stillness is interrupted by running footsteps from below. Elizabeth checks Elizabeth’s watch and tells Mackie that the commotion is Elizabeth’s rescue party, sent because Elizabeth had not emerged after two hours. Chris Hudson appears, visibly relieved to find Elizabeth alive and able to stop running, while Elizabeth notes that Mackie will likely have to repeat what he has told her.
