Chapter 1: Joyce
Overview
Joyce recalls how Elizabeth recruited her into an unusual investigation at Coopers Chase by asking for medical insight into an old stabbing case. Joyce’s nursing knowledge suggests the victim might have survived with basic assistance, strengthening Elizabeth’s suspicion that the official story is wrong.
The encounter establishes Elizabeth as sharp, secretive, and well connected, while Joyce’s curiosity draws her toward the Thursday meetings that will shape the story.
Summary
Joyce begins by explaining how she first became involved with Elizabeth at Coopers Chase. Joyce already knows Elizabeth by reputation, and remembers being on a quiz team with Stephen, Elizabeth’s third husband.
At lunch a few months earlier, Elizabeth approaches Joyce with a manila folder and asks about a hypothetical knife attack. Because Joyce was a nurse, Elizabeth wants Joyce’s professional opinion on how long a young woman would survive after being stabbed several times below the breastbone without an artery being severed.
Elizabeth checks the victim’s weight in the file, and Bernard Cottle, a precise and helpful resident, converts forty-six kilos into seven stone three. Joyce estimates that without help the woman would bleed to death in about forty-five minutes.
Elizabeth then asks what would happen if someone with basic medical skill, perhaps an ex-army person, had treated the wounds. Joyce says the woman would likely survive, since the injuries would be straightforward to patch up. This supports Elizabeth’s suspicion that the case does not make sense as presented and that the boyfriend may have killed the girl.
Joyce, intrigued, asks to see the corpse photograph. Elizabeth happily gives Joyce a photocopy, saying everyone has copies, then asks whether Joyce is free on Thursdays. Joyce presents this as her first introduction to the mysterious Thursday meetings.
