Chapter 60

Overview

Bogdan seeks out Marina because he believes she can help him decide what to do about the bones, showing that the graveyard discovery continues to trouble him. Instead of finding Marina, he meets Stephen, an elderly man in her flat, whose presence surprises Bogdan and adds a new complication to his private investigation.

Summary

Bogdan decides to visit Marina because he believes she will know what to do about the bones. He brings her flowers gathered from the wood and tied in the style his mother used, suggesting the visit is personal and carefully considered.

When Bogdan reaches Flat 8 and presses the buzzer, a man answers, which surprises Bogdan because he has been watching Marina closely and has not seen a man associated with the flat. Unsure whether he has the correct address, Bogdan explains that he is looking for Marina.

The man, Stephen, opens the door in pyjamas and welcomes Bogdan warmly, assuming the visit is ordinary. Bogdan sees a photograph of a younger Marina on the hallway table, confirming that he is in the right flat.

Stephen says Marina is probably at the shops or visiting her mother and invites Bogdan to wait, offering tea and conversation. The chapter ends with Stephen asking whether Bogdan plays chess, turning Bogdan’s urgent attempt to consult Marina into an unexpected encounter with the man in her flat.
