Chapter 106
Overview
Elizabeth realizes the murder case has finally been solved after Ron's photograph clue and Ibrahim's final evidence fit together. Leaving Stephen asleep and expecting Bogdan's company later, Elizabeth heads out to seek justice with Ron and Ibrahim.
The chapter shifts the story from investigation to reckoning, while Elizabeth's reflections on age, friendship, and mortality give the impending confrontation emotional weight.
Summary
Elizabeth leaves Stephen asleep at home and expects Bogdan to visit after work for chess. Wanting both comfort and practical help when Elizabeth returns, Elizabeth leaves a broken wardrobe-door knob on the kitchen table, confident Bogdan will be unable to resist fixing it.
Elizabeth reflects on how Ron brought Elizabeth the photograph Karen Playfair had recognized. Though the identification first seemed impossible, Elizabeth worked through the implications and began to see that Karen's memory pointed toward a terrible truth.
Ibrahim has now returned with the final piece of evidence, completing the picture for Elizabeth. Elizabeth concludes that the case is solved, and that what remains is not discovery but justice.
Elizabeth walks out into the cold evening, thinking about aging, mortality, and the changing seasons. Despite those thoughts, Elizabeth feels aligned with late summer: still holding on, still capable of one last trick.
Elizabeth meets Ron, who arrives grim but resolute despite hiding his pain, and then sees Ibrahim waiting by the door with a folder. With her friends gathered and the decisive evidence in hand, Elizabeth prepares to begin the final act of the case.
