Chapter 91

Overview

Elizabeth and Joyce question Gordon Playfair about Ian Ventham’s attempt to buy Gordon’s land, learning that Ian threatened to get it “one way or another” shortly before Ian died. Gordon’s refusal gives him an apparent motive, but he also reveals he is now accepting a different offer.

Meanwhile, police activity at the Garden of Eternal Rest suggests Bernard’s note has led to an official search. The chapter shifts the club’s investigation toward Gordon’s memories and photographs from the 1970s, potentially linking the present-day murders to the site’s older history.

Summary

Elizabeth and Joyce walk to Gordon Playfair’s farm, but the journey takes longer because police have cordoned off the Garden of Eternal Rest. Police cars, a white van believed to be forensics, and officers with spades have gone up the hill; Martin Sedge watches from a top-floor flat with binoculars and reports only that there is digging.

At the farm, Gordon jokes that his old house is falling apart like he is. Elizabeth and Joyce make friendly conversation about Coopers Chase, and Gordon recalls visiting the site when it was run by nuns, who were sociable and useful in medical emergencies.

Elizabeth then asks about Gordon’s meeting with Ian Ventham on the morning Ian was murdered. Gordon explains that Gordon’s youngest daughter, Karen, wanted Gordon to hear Ian out because Karen wanted Gordon to sell the land. Gordon disliked Ian and rejected the offer, even after Ian tried to make Gordon feel guilty about Gordon’s children.

Gordon says Ian ended the meeting by threatening to get Gordon’s land one way or another, and Gordon replied that it would happen over Gordon’s dead body. Despite that conflict, Gordon now says he has received another offer and intends to accept it now that Ian is gone.

Elizabeth reveals the real reason for the visit: she and Joyce want Gordon’s memories of the area from the 1970s. Gordon says he has many memories and may have photo albums, though he warns that the pictures are mostly of sheep, leaving Elizabeth and Joyce poised to search the past for clues.
