Overview

Summary
Matthew Mackie receives a call from Elizabeth asking whether he is available for a confession. The request unsettles him because a recent police interview has already disrupted the quiet routine that had helped him keep painful memories under control.
Matthew reflects on the modest peace of his life: his house, garden, pension, neighbors, walks to the sea, and small exchanges with local people. Since the recent violence and questioning, that peace feels lost, and Matthew fears that some damage cannot be repaired.
