Chapter 49: Joyce
Overview
The graveyard protest shifts from a chaotic blockade into a public standoff after Chris Hudson admits the police are unlikely to arrest the elderly residents. Ibrahim’s diplomacy thins the crowd, but a small group remains padlocked to the gate while Bernard and Ron become the symbolic last line of resistance.
Ian Ventham’s legal authority is intact, but his control over the situation weakens as the residents turn the confrontation into theatre. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger when a taxi arrives, suggesting the standoff is about to change direction.
Summary
Joyce recounts the graveyard standoff after Elizabeth arrives and finds Bernard already asleep, which Joyce considers fortunate because Bernard has been tired and worked up. Joyce, Elizabeth, and Ron go to see Donna and DCI Chris Hudson as the dispute over Ian Ventham’s planned digging continues.
Chris explains that Ian has paperwork allowing the work and warns that anyone blocking the diggers may have to be arrested. Ron challenges Chris and insults Ian’s paperwork, while Donna suggests Chris speak to Joyce as a level head. Joyce correctly senses Chris does not really intend to arrest the residents, leaving the police and protesters in a stalemate.
The confrontation briefly turns comic as Ron questions whether Chris is proud of himself, Joyce gives Chris health advice, and Ibrahim suggests Pilates. Ian loses patience with the joking and reminds Donna and Chris that he pays their wages, but Donna deflects him with a joke about a pay rise, further irritating him.
Ibrahim intervenes calmly and offers to thin the crowd. Ibrahim tells the residents that anyone unwilling to risk arrest should clear the path, which causes many to move their chairs off the route while still staying to watch. The barricade becomes more like a stage, with Maureen Gadd, Barbara Kelly, and Bronagh padlocked to the gate.
Bernard, now awake, remains sitting in front of the gate as the final visible blocker. Ron joins Bernard in solidarity, and Joyce feels proud of both men. Ian withdraws to his car with Donna and Chris, Joyce pours tea, and the scene seems ready to wind down until a taxi arrives, promising a new turn in the confrontation.
