Overview

Summary
Joyce reflects that telling Chris and Donna about the bones was the right choice because now everyone can watch for people connected to the 1970s body. With the secret exposed, Joyce feels the situation is fairer and expects the police and the club to look into who lived at Coopers Chase then and remains there now.
Joyce turns her attention to the unresolved search for Turkish Johnny and Bobby Tanner. Joyce assumes Elizabeth is already planning how to track them down and imagines being summoned the next morning to travel anywhere from Reading to Inverness or even abroad in pursuit of one of the fugitives.
Joyce checks that her passport is still valid and fantasizes about sending Joanna a postcard from Cyprus while chasing a possibly armed suspect. Joyce also considers inviting Bernard along but worries that an unexpected investigative trip would overwhelm him.
Joyce admits that Bernard seems to be drifting away from her, noting that lunch with Bernard was subdued despite the steak and kidney. Joyce also senses that the others may quietly wonder whether Bernard was present at Coopers Chase fifty years earlier, but Joyce accepts that they may check his past.
The chapter ends with Joyce’s characteristic aside about Timbuktu being a real place, recalling that it came up in a quiz and assuming Ibrahim would know where it is. The light tone contrasts with Joyce’s awareness that the investigation may now touch people close to her.
